These are some tough financial times we find ourselves in. More and more Americans are trying to figure out how to get out of debt than ever before, perhaps in the history of our great country. Unemployment, downsizing and the fact that companies just plain don’t have jobs have contributed greatly to our mounting debt.

Add to that the current mortgage crisis and the fact that foreclosures are becoming everyday occurrences throughout the land, and we see that we have an economy of businesses and consumers searching for various ways on how to get out of debt. The good news is that it is being done every day and with the right get out of debt plan you to can become a success story.

The first thing you need to do is get dead serious about it. Many times we are tempted to just bury our heads in the sand and hope the problem goes away because it’s quite frankly, so damn depressing to deal with to begin with. But we all know that’s not going to help so you must resist that temptation and get over feeling sorry for yourself if you are at all serious about learning how to become debt free.

A change of lifestyle is going to be in order. And you must become fiscally disciplined in order to succeed. It will not be easy and at times may seem painful, but it will work.

The first thing I recommend is that you get a spreadsheet and set it up on your computer, or you can use a pencil and paper which will work just fine, and write down all of your current expenses. This will be invaluable and you will refer back to it on a consistent basis.

Now take a look at all the items on your sheet and you will suddenly begin to notice that there are more than likely a great many items do you can do without. Things such as magazines subscriptions, cable TV and $4 dollar cups of coffee are definitely candidates for elimination.

You may want to check out the closet too. To get out of debt there are no sacred cows so you may want to curtail any future clothing purchases and make due with what you have. Entertainment is another area you may want to visit for cost cutting measures. Eating at home as opposed to dining out can be a huge money saver.

A great many people find themselves in debt because of credit card use. Credit counseling services can be helpful in getting your credit card payments under control. Whenever people ask me to help get out of credit card debt I always tell them to take a close look at their credit card situation to see if they can do anything with it. Almost inevitably, they usually can.

And of course, if you are in debt that means you are not living within your means. Getting a hold of your financial situation and not spending more money than you bring in is the financially responsible way to live.

To get out of debt you have to understand that every dollar counts and that each and every wise and frugal financial move that you make leads you one step closer to becoming debt-free, no matter how small or insignificant it you may think it is at the time.
