How to Get the Best Rates on Student Loans Bad Credit

Are you in the market for a little financial help for college but don’t have the greatest credit history in the world? If this is your situation but take heart, there are student loans bad credit available but they may be a little bit more expensive than what those with excellent credit ratings would pay.

The United States government through the Department of Education is the biggest lender to college students. The most popular loan offered by the government is the Stafford loan. The Stafford loan however, assumes that students will be going to take to college from high school and will therefore not have a credit rating established as of yet.

For that reason the Stafford loan and its counterpart, the Perkins loan should be the first forms of payment that you look at. As a matter of fact, the federal government is so accommodating as far as student loans go but the only way you would be turned down is if you have already had a federal loan and defaulted on it.

Receiving student loans bad credit from private institutions such as banks is a completely different story. As with any loan private financial institutions way the credit worthiness of the applicant. If for some reason you do not qualify for a federal student loan and you have poor credit then perhaps you can get a parent or relative to cosign for you.

Will once again going the federal route is the most desirable for student loans that credit because the government is committed to assisting every American citizen that is seeking a college education. And remember, payments on student loans are deferred until after graduation so hopefully at that time you will have improved your credit rating and can therefore renegotiate the terms of the loan for more favorable interest rates.
